Some lucky guests on Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney’s Animal Kingdom had a special treat – witnessing the birth of a zebra on the savanna. The baby boy weighs about 65 pounds and was standing and nuzzling with his mom within minutes of his birth.
It turns out that baby zebras imprint on their mother’s scent and memorize her unique hind leg markings.
Disney will introduce the mom and baby to the rest of the herd on the savanna, including the baby’s sister Asha.
The new baby is a Hartmann’s mountain zebra, which can be found in sub-Saharan Africa. This species is vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting.
