Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom Closing for At Least a Year

Confirming previous rumors, Disney announced that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will close for at least a year.

Construction permits indicate the ride will close for a major refurbishment, even before Disney made the official announcement of the beyond Big Thunder project.

The official closing date for the temporary refurbishment is January 6, 2025, and the last day to experience the ride is January 5. The refurbishment is expected to last into 2026.

As was previously announced, a Disney Villains land will be constructed beyond Big Thunder so it is presumed that the lengthy refurbishment project will likely include getting the area ready for the new space. The new land will include two major attractions, dining, and shopping.

Two “Cars” rides will also be part of a new area replacing Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America. Both the island and the Liberty Square Riverboat will permanently close.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was last closed for a standard refurbishment in January 2024.

Big updates to Frontierland were already seen this year with the openings of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and Country Bears Musical Jamboree.
