New Interactive Disney Animation Experience Announced, Opening At Hollywood Studios In 2026

A Whole New Experience for Animation Fans

In an exciting new development at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a completely reimagined animation-themed experience is on its way. Inspired by the Emmy-winning short film Once Upon a Studio, this upcoming attraction promises a fresh and interactive celebration of Disney Animation.

Replacing the current Star Wars: Launch Bay location, the experience will be called The Magic of Disney Animation and is set to open in 2026. The building itself will resemble the iconic Roy E. Disney Animation Building in California and will even feature the Sorcerer Hat on top, adding a whimsical flair and magical ambiance.

Characters Come Alive in the Studio

The premise of the attraction invites visitors into a playful world where animators have stepped out, and classic Disney characters have taken over the studio. The interior will be filled with surprises and imaginative takes on what goes on inside a working animation studio.

Guests will:

  • Interact with animated portraits that spring to life

  • Watch a short film experience with an unexpected twist

  • Try their hand at drawing beloved Disney characters

Each section of the building will feel like a working part of an animation studio—only here, the artists are your favorite Disney characters who are taking charge of the fun.

Imaginative Play Areas for Young Guests

For younger visitors, there’s an entire area designed just for them. The “Drawn to Wonderland” playground takes its cues from the whimsical art of Disney Legend Mary Blair, especially her original concept work for Alice in Wonderland. This indoor space includes:

  • A massive flower garden with interactive musical elements

  • A Mad Tea Party-themed playset

  • A Tulgey Wood-inspired exploration zone

This area is perfect for little ones to play and explore in a creatively designed, weatherproof space that encourages curiosity and imagination.

Meet Beloved Characters in Creative Ways

Another big draw will be the wide variety of character greetings available throughout the attraction. Whether your family loves Mickey, Moana, or Maui, there will be plenty of photo ops and personal moments waiting throughout this experience.

Expect:

  • Frequent character encounters throughout the day

  • Unique photo backdrops inspired by Disney Animation

  • Interactive moments that go beyond a standard meet-and-greet

Hollywood Studios Courtyard Gets a Major Makeover

Just outside the new animation experience, the surrounding courtyard will also get a full transformation. Inspired by the real Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, this redesigned area will reflect Disney’s filmmaking legacy.

Look for:

  • A replica of the Studio Theater (continuing to host The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure)

  • A revamped soundstage for a new Disney Jr. production

  • Shaded relaxation areas perfect for snacks or quiet time

  • Surprise appearances from characters “playing” in the outdoor space

This enhanced courtyard will blend creative storytelling with real-world Disney history, making it a destination of its own.

What to Expect During the Transition

To prepare for this large-scale transformation, a few current attractions will be closing. Starting September 25, 2025:

  • Animation Courtyard will close for renovations

  • Disney Jr. Play and Dance! will end its run

However, The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure and Walt Disney Presents will remain open during the changes.

Until the new experience opens in 2026, families can revisit Once Upon a Studio on Disney+ to catch the heartwarming short that inspired it all.
