Today marked an exciting milestone at Disneyland Paris as Bruce Vaughn, President and Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Imagineering, along with Natacha Rafalski, President of Disneyland Paris, unveiled a cutting-edge robotic character inspired by Olaf, the charming snowman from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen.
This launch ushers in a fresh era of Disney character innovation, blending technology, storytelling, and teamwork to bring the magic from the screen right into the park.

Innovation at the Core: From Screen to Reality
Every move and expression of Olaf has been carefully designed to capture the charm and personality that fans adore from the movie — lively, inquisitive, and totally him. His sparkling snow-like glow, which twinkles just like freshly fallen snow, is achieved thanks to shimmering iridescent fibers. These thoughtful touches make Olaf one of the most lifelike and expressive characters ever created, and he’s gearing up to make his magical debut at Disney parks soon.
Disney’s journey began with Walt Disney’s pioneering hand-drawn animations, and today, Walt Disney Animation Studios, along with Pixar Animation Studios, keep that creative spirit alive. The design team worked hand-in-hand with the original animators from Walt Disney Animation Studios to make sure every gesture perfectly reflects Olaf’s character. This process goes beyond simply copying animation—it’s about capturing the heart and intent behind the creators’ vision.

The Technology Behind the Magic
As the home of some of the world’s greatest storytellers, Disney is always exploring new frontiers in innovation and technology — it’s truly part of the magic here.
Just like every Disney creation, it all begins with the story, and the top priority is developing storytelling technology that helps Disney Imagineers bring beloved characters to life in unforgettable ways.

Although the BDX droids — those Star Wars free-roaming robots that replicate movements through simulation — have been mingling with guests for some time, Olaf takes things to a whole new level: bringing to life an animated character with fluid, non-physical motions. To capture Olaf’s true spirit, the creative team tapped into a type of artificial intelligence known as reinforcement learning, pushing the hardware’s capabilities to match the artists’ vision perfectly.
Humans spend years learning to walk and even longer to move gracefully. Thanks to deep reinforcement learning, Olaf can develop these abilities in just a fraction of that time.

Olaf’s “snow” moves in a way that’s quite different from the rigid shells found on other robotic figures. Plus, he can fully express himself with a movable mouth, eyes, and detachable carrot nose and arms. Best of all, Olaf can chat and interact with guests, making for an unforgettable experience.
Innovation shines in so many ways throughout our parks, experiences, and products—all aimed at enhancing guest enjoyment and spreading happiness to Disney fans everywhere. And the coolest part? This is only the beginning!
From the BDX Droids to the self-balancing H.E.R.B.I.E., and now Olaf, each represents a leap forward in bringing beloved Disney characters to life. The pace at which new characters come to life and meet guests is faster than ever. We’re growing bigger and bolder, working to deliver even more expressive, emotive, and surprising characters across Disney experiences worldwide.
