Coming Soon From Disney Animation Studios

Several trailers, screengrabs, and clips have been released for new featured films from Disney Animation Studios, all arriving on Disney+ and in theaters between 2021 and 2024.

Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Raya and the Last Dragon: Raya and the Last Dragon will take place in the Kingdom of Kumandra, where we will meet Raya, a girl on a mission to unite her Kingdom. Raya is described as having “wit as sharp as her blade”. Together Raya and her friends (both real and magical), are the Kingdom’s only hope to rebuild a “shattered world”. The film will pull in inspiration from southeast Asian culture and landscapes. Kelly Marie Tran stars as Raya, when the film drops on Disney+ Premium and in theaters on March 5, 2021. *Raya and the Last Dragon will be the first Disney featured film to be produced from home (over 400 according to Disney!).

Baymax!: A new series coming to Disney+, Baymax!, will follow a fan-favorite character from Disney’s past, Baymax (Big Hero 6). The series is considered to be a continuation of the film, where guests will be able to explore more of the City of San Fransokyo. During the exploration, viewers will meet a new patient of “nurse” Baymax in every episode. Each patient will have their own unique story and lesson. Baymax! arrives on Disney+ in 2022.

Zootopia+: This short-form series will bring back a number of familiar faces, as well as re-introducing us to ones we only briefly met in Disney’s 2016 film, Zootopia. Fru Fru, the Tiger Dancers, and Flash the sloth are just some of the characters the series will follow. We will get a chance to see Zootopia’s comical take on some real-life pop culture references. Zootopia+ will swing into Disney+ in 2022.

Tiana: We head back to New Orleans in a long-form musical comedy series, starring none other than Tiana herself. According to Disney, we will get to explore not only Louisiana but also lands yet to be introduced. The Princess Tiana series will float onto Disney+ in 2023. *We expect the series to follow a rough timeline of the Splash Mountain overhauls.

Moana: Moana will be another long-form musical comedy series coming to Disney+ in 2023. The new series will follow Moana on voyages across the seas. During their travels, viewers will follow Moana on her journey in learning about culture and traditions from her native home.

Iwaju: Iwaju, or as it roughly translates to “the future,” is series from the collaborative work of Disney and Kugali. Kugali, a group of storytellers from Nigeria and Uganda, was established to bring African stories from African artists, across the world. With the help of Disney, Kugali will bring viewers to a Nigeria based in science fiction. Iwaju will be a long-form series on Disney+ starting in 2022.

Encanto: In Fall 2021, the Walt Disney Animation Studios will present to you, Encanto. Touted as Disney’s 60th feature in the studio’s canon, Encanto will take place in Colombia. Here, viewers will meet a magical family in their “encanto” or charmed place. The film will be directed by the team that brought you Zootopia and Lin-Manuel Miranda will provide the musical score for the film.
