Kuzcotopia Comes Alive: Typhoon Lagoon Turns Into Emperor Dream For D23 Only

As part of Destination D23, for one special evening, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park became Kuzcotopia, the flashy tropical paradise dreamed up by Emperor Kuzco in the animated classic The Emperor’s New Groove.

In the original 2000 Disney film, Kuzco’s outrageous plan was to demolish a villager’s home to build a luxury retreat called Kuzcotopia—“a birthday gift to himself.” Although he eventually has a change of heart in the story, Disney is making the emperor’s vision come alive in the real world—if only for one night.

The after-hours event, called D23 Kuzcotopia Night, took place on August 30, 2025, exclusively for attendees of the sold-out Destination D23: A Journey Around the Worlds of Disney convention.

Admission to the event was included with the weekend-long convention ticket, giving fans a rare chance to see the water park in a completely new light.

Characters and Unique Entertainment

Special appearances by characters from The Emperor’s New Groove, included Kuzco (both in human and llama form), Yzma, and Kronk. These characters are occasionally seen at Disneyland Paris, but have been almost entirely absent from Walt Disney World for decades.  It was nice to welcome them back.

The emperor definitely had his groove on at Kuzcotopia.

Music filled the night.

A DJ kept the party going.

A themed activity called Exotic Bird Bingo, inspired by Kronk and the Junior Woodchucks, was popular.

The event provided full access to Typhoon Lagoon’s attractions and water slides.

The wave pool was a popular spot.

Ahh, a lazy river at night. Utopia. Or, Kuzcotopia.

Exclusive Food and Drinks

The evening featured complimentary snacks such as popcorn, ice cream (yes, Mickey Bars!), and soft drinks. For those looking for something more adventurous, themed food and drinks were available for purchase.

I tried the Kronk Burger, a Peruvian-inspired creation with seasoned ground beef, fresh toppings, queso fresco, avocado slices, and a drizzle of Aji Verde sauce. Two crispy spinach puff triangles completed the presentation.  In a word, it was delicious, especially for a quick service hamburger.

Special Extras for Attendees

Guests attending Kuzcotopia Night didn’t just walk away with memories. Everyone received a special event gift that was very useful – a waterproof phone case that you can hang around your neck to protect your phone.
