Big changes are coming to one of Magic Kingdom’s most iconic attractions. Beginning July 7, the Walt Disney World Railroad will shift to a modified operating plan as Frontierland prepares for a major transformation. This change coincides with the permanent closure of Rivers of America.
Rather than its usual grand circle tour around the park, the railroad will run in a special “shuttle mode,” traveling back and forth between Fantasyland (at Storybook Circus) and Main Street, U.S.A.
Frontierland Station Closing Temporarily
As part of this operational shift, the Frontierland Railroad Station will close while construction gets underway in that section of the park. Guests who typically use that stop will need to board or disembark at either Main Street, U.S.A., or Fantasyland during this time.
The Frontierland station itself recently received a refurbishment to complement the reimagining of Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, making its temporary closure a bit of a surprise to some parkgoers.
Modified Seating for Guest Comfort
To make this temporary shuttle operation more comfortable, Disney’s Imagineering team plans to adjust several of the train’s benches. Some seats will be turned to face in the opposite direction, allowing guests to ride facing forward no matter which way the train is moving.
This approach helps avoid a lengthy closure like the one that took place when the park prepared for TRON Lightcycle / Run, which required the railroad to halt operations for an extended period.
Classic Attraction Keeps On Track
While fans may be disappointed that the train won’t make its usual full circle around Magic Kingdom, keeping the attraction open in a limited capacity is a welcome compromise. It allows guests to continue experiencing the charm of the Walt Disney World Railroad even while Frontierland undergoes a major transformation.
This operational tweak ensures the railroad remains part of the park’s daily magic, offering scenic views and a nostalgic experience for visitors of all ages.
Would you still ride the Walt Disney World Railroad if it only went back and forth between two stops?
