Walt Disney Animation announced they will no longer develop long-form streaming content for Disney+.
An article in The Hollywood Reporter stated that Disney has stopped plans for a Disney+ series called “Tiana.” That series followed the events of “The Princess and the Frog.” Unnamed sources stated that the cancellation of “Tiana” is part of a broader shift by Walt Disney Animation away from animated long-form content created exclusively for Disney+.
When the pandemic kept people out of theaters, company executives and then-CEO Bob Chapek wanted more original content to be funneled onto Disney+ in hopes that subscriber numbers would increase. Now, Disney is going back to creating animated films for release in theaters and will only create shorter shows for release on Disney+.
This change follows the 2024 news that Pixar Studios will also stop producing long-form content for Disney+.
Sources indicated Walt Disney Animation will continue with its planned schedule of releasing around one theatrical film per year, in addition to some smaller shorts or limited projects in between.
Do you think Walt Disney Animation Studios moving from long-form streaming on Disney+ is a good idea?
