The Walt Disney Company Reportedly Considering Amazon Prime-Style Membership Program

A membership program for Disney?

According to The Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel and Sarah Krouse, The Walt Disney Company is considering introducing a membership program similar to Amazon Prime.

The program could offer things like guest discounts and perks on Disney+ subscriptions, theme park tickets, and merchandise with the purchase of a monthly or annual membership fee. Currently, there is no timeframe established, and it is important to note that according to insider’s claims, it is still very early in the discussions.

Disney’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Communications offer has confirmed that the company is in fact considering the option. The program has an advocate in Disney CEO Bob Chapek, who has worked to get Disney to cross-sell across its various platforms. The idea is to create more value for customers, while at the same time, Disney would collect more information about customers’ individual preferences.

Presently Disney does offer a membership program in D23, though the new venture would focus more on casual Disney fans.

The Wall Street Journal claims that Disney is also working on a retail component to add to Disney+. Shirts, themed accessories, and children’s costumes would be available through shopDisney, exclusively for subscribers. It is expected this feature will be introduced before the conclusion of 2022.

A membership service like Amazon Prime, along with Disney’s diversified portfolio, could allow Disney to harness various points of data about customer interest.

A launch date for the membership program has not been announced. Check back for updates.
